Class Descriptions and Getting Started

We are excited to have you become a part of Guruv Yoga. We know getting started can be confusing. If you are unsure about anything, please ask at the front desk, call and talk to the director, or ask your teacher.

FINDING THE RIGHT STYLE OF CLASS TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS

Yoga is an incredible system for your total health and well being; a 5,000 year old tradition offering a great variety of styles and benefits. Guruv Yoga has been created to allow people of all ages and stages of life to find the right style, teacher and class level to suit their specific needs.

These range from the more athletic, such as Flow, Guruv Yoga and Ashtanga, which connect poses in flowing sequences that are intended to build up heat and intensity in the student, to others like Hatha and Karma, which are decidedly slower, bringing focus to each individual pose or asana.

Then there are the more meditative classes, where a focus is placed on the breath to help students gain clarity and calm in both mind and body. We also offer specialty classes, developed for specific types of people such as moms, kids, seniors, and those suffering from injuries and chronic issues.

Finding the style of yoga that best suits your needs is crucial to having a great experience. Why not start with one style such as Hatha, build confidence in your poses, then move on to a new style to discover and develop the asanas into linked and flowing sequences?

ASHTANGA
Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient and traditional system composed of several specific sequences of postures. Designed to heat the body to safely stretch and strengthen through special awareness on the breath!
Please look at level

HOT YOGA
HOT YOGA consists of a balanced, healthy sequence of Hatha Yoga postures praticed in a heated room. HOT YOGA is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced yogis; HOT YOGA has fewer chatarangas (reversed pushups) which make the yoga practice a favorite among students with shoulder issues. Athletes love HOT YOGA for the healing benefits of the sequences and the heat. BE PREPEARED TO SWEAT!

YIN YOGA
Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice.
Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect compliment to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.
While initially this style of yoga can seem quite boring, passive, or soft, yin practice can be quite challenging due to the long duration of the poses. We can remain in the postures anywhere from one to twenty minutes! Yin and yang tissues respond quite differently to being exercised. You need to experience this to really know what Yin Yoga is all about. After you have experienced it, even just once, you will realize that you have been doing only half of the asana practice.

INSIGHT MEDITATION
These classes will be primarily breathing, relaxation and meditation. Each week will have a different topic based on the eight limbs of yoga.
Great class to end your weekend and start off the new week with a clearer mind, relaxed body, and refreshed spirit!

FINDING YOUR LEVEL
You can walk in any day and take a level I class. Guruv Yoga classes are broken down into classes by levels, with 1,2,& 3 corresponding to beginner, intermediate and advanced. The levels of classes correspond to the mastery the student possesses of the yoga postures or asanas.

In Yoga, there are thousands of poses, each carrying a specific benefit to the body. It is important as a beginner student to be comfortable with the beginning poses. Level I classes help the beginner connect the poses in sequences that create larger benefits to the body and introduce the student to the use of the breath in moving in and out of poses.

Then, when you have gained confidence and comfort in the basic poses, it's time to move to more challenging levels. If you have a solid understanding of the sun salutes, standing poses, basic backbends and inversions, you're ready for a level 2 or 3 class.

Level I
For beginning students to learn correct alignment and breathing in basic yoga postures. Ashtanga class is a warm-up and Ashtanga Flow.

Level I/II
For students who have attended Level I classes and are ready for a more advanced beginning class. The postures are presented in more challenging ways. Ashtanga class will be entire primary series.

Level II
Designed to take students to the intermediate level. Further strength, stamina and flexibility will be required. Ashtanga class is second series, building on primary series.

Level II/III
Presumes students are familiar with intermediate yoga postures. Further variations and more challenging and vigorous sequences are typical. Previous yoga experience required.

PHYSICAL OR MEDICAL ISSUES
We all have our particular health concerns or issues, be it an old sports injury or a tender lower back. We cannot stress enough just how important it is to communicate any pre-existing medical problems to your teacher before class.
Teachers will tailor the Yoga poses to accommodate your needs. This is particularly true for people recovering from injuries, with chronic muscular-skeletal issues, or those recovering from surgical or medical procedures.

FINALLY...

DRESS should be comfortable. Wear loose-fitting or non-restrictive clothing and avoid accessories that could impede your movement. Classes are barefoot.

PERFUME is a no. Please...help us maintain a fragrance-free environment.

AN EMPTY STOMACH will ensure you are more comfortable in class. Wait two to three hours after a meal or a half hour after a light snack or drink. Avoid sipping water during class, but drink plenty afterwards.

YOGA MATS can be borrowed before class or purchased at the studio. We recommend you have your own.

CHECK-IN at the front desk, take off your shoes, turn off your cell phone and log in on the sign up sheet.

TALK to the teacher. If you're new why not enter the studio a few minutes early and introduce yourself to the teacher? Those having to leave early should tell the teacher before class.
